How can cannabis be prescribed medically if it’s under Schedule I?

First off, I’m not taking any stance on whether weed should be legal or not, and I don’t want to debate it here. I’m just curious about this particular thing.

Drugs listed under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act are those that:
1) Have a high potential for abuse
2) Have a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision
and here’s the focus of my question

3) Have no currently accepted medical use in treatment.

No prescriptions may be written for Schedule I substances, according to the CSA and the DEA. Whether or not it should be, cannabis is listed under schedule I. And yet, somehow, it is still being prescribed in 13 states. How is this legally possible??

It’s not legally possible. States which recognize medical marijuana do so in contravention of federal law. People who possess medical marijuana run the risk of being arrested.

If you’d like some more information – wikipedia has a good article on “Gonzales v. Raich,” which is a case dealing with the California attempt to promote legalized marijuana.
